Pamela S. Nadell, PhD

Pamela S. Nadell is Professor of History and holds the Patrick Clendenen Chair in Women’s and Gender History at American University, where she directs the Jewish Studies Program.  Her honors include AU’s highest faculty award, the Scholar/Teacher of the Year, and the American Jewish Historical Society’s Lee Max Friedman Award for distinguished service.  Her books include Women Who Would be Rabbis: A History of Women’s Ordination, 1889-1985 (Beacon Press, 1998), which was a finalist for a National Jewish Book Award, and Making Women’s Women’s Histories: Beyond National Perspectives, co-edited with Kate Haulman.  She has consulted to museum exhibitions at the Library of Congress, the National Museum of American Jewish History, and Beit Hatefutsot: The Museum of the Jewish People.  She is currently president of the Association for Jewish Studies.
